Before You Die: Atacama Desert, Chile by Matthew Barker

The driest place on Earth (although El Nino does rear up once in a while); at certain points you can see the Pacific Ocean to the west and the Andes to the east. You may even catch a glimpse of one of NASA’s robots - the space agency likes to use the moonscape-like terrain as a testing ground for its latest interstellar Poo Chi. Che Guevera once spent the night here, but now package tours to this desert make it rather too tame.

They say: “So vast you’ll think you can see the world curving away from you” (Tatler)

We say: Popular location for glossy fashion shoots. Currently the 'In' desert.
