Inspiring Travel Writing from Susan Storm

Born in Prague, Susan was wheeled in her pram through Switzerland, Austria and England, landing in Africa with a terminal case of itchy feet. Later, she sailed to England, worked in TV, bussed through Europe as the group's cook, and emigrated to Perth, Australia. Hiking in Nepal, she knew she wanted to be a photojournalist more than anything. She's won awards for writing and photography, has stories published in Travellers Tales anthologies and has several books in her head.
Singapore, Italy, Africa, Indonesia, China, Vietnam and India have also hosted her. Elephants, camels, bemos, rafts, dugouts and shoulders have also transported her. International and national magazines and newspapers - Peak, Australian Photography, Lonely Planet, Silver Kris, House & Garden, Herald Sun Sunday are some who have published her. Her proudest achievement? Having the courage to still pull up roots.
She's now living in Sydney, specialising in food and travel writing and photography.

Patagonia
Four days from anywhere, Joachim flattens a rabbit under the threadbare tyres of his pink truck. The wheels lose their grip and we slide off the potholed road into the sand of the Patagonian desert. I am pressed against the truck's dusty door and...

Croatia
Rab, Croatia. Walk through the gardenia-perfumed forest on the tiny Croatian island of Rab, where the only sounds are of silence, the falling of petals, the hush of history under carved Roman pillars and the swish of apprentice waves on rolling...

Australian Outback, Northern Territory. Circumnavigate the rusty hulk of Uluru, Australia's rock of ages, listen to the songs of ancestors sung by the winds whistling through great gaping gashes carved by sneaking waters; as a frilled neck lizard...

Patagonia
Patagonia, South America. A land of stones and dust and desiccated skies. Vultures hovered overhead, a rhea and her chicks skipped by, a glacier groaned, old volcanic fallout covered lone haciendas, a gaucho and his steed loped out of an echoing...

Jaisalmer
I scrutinised my travelling companion. His coat was moth-eaten and dusty, his teeth looked like stained piano keys, his legs were scarred, he had knobbly hairy knees and flat feet, and to crown it all, he wore a nose ring. My heart sank. Abdul and I...

Australia
We’d gone to Shark Bay to visit Dirk Hartog Island by catamaran, and to watch for the mystical dugongs that played in the waters. We were having a drink with our hosts, that first night, and all outside was as quiet as the deepest seas, the...

Indonesia
The ruler of the island, patrolling the shore as we attempted to land our dugout, was not a pretty sight. We’d obviously interrupted his meal - a culinary altercation with a large turtle - and he wasn't pleased. His calloused feet splayed in...

Toscana, Umbria, Sienna, Firenze: magic words on my tongue, as colourful and evocative as the places themselves. I fell in love with Italy the moment I saw it, seduced by the romantic light of the silvery olive trees, the voluptuous sculptures and...

The bridge swung like a high wire in a circus. But, this was no trapeze act. I didn't have a balancing pole and instead of excited crowds cheering me, only jagged mountains jeered; instead of sawdust and popcorn on the ground, icy water waited with...

I'm a surprised participant in an airborne circus. The overhead luggage compartment conjures a portable television set onto my lap. A doe eyed child in front turns around and with an accomplished sleight of hand deposits yellow rice on my head. A...
