Inspiring Travel Writing from Stephen Emms

Stephen Emms contributes to the travel sections of The Guardian, Observer, Times, Independent on Sunday and consumer titles like Coast and Sunday Times Travel Magazine. A genuine Margate boy, he likes nothing more than to sing the praises of a forgotten seaside resort across the UK and beyond. In 2008 he was highly commended in the Bradt/Independent On Sunday Travel Writers Awards for a story on Catania, Sicily.
Stephens flirted with coastal living in recent years, but, between trips, is currently landlubbed in the grime of Kentish Town.

It’s late here in Folkestone, the night before our 40 mile, four day coastal trek along South East Kent. Tomorrow we’ll stagger to Dover, and then on to Deal, Ramsgate and Margate, the idea being to peer into these towns on the eve of...

It’s a little known fact that famed Victorian architect Samuel Peto’s dream was for Lowestoft, the most easterly town in the UK, to rival Brighton. But it’s not hard to see why. Stretching from the golden sands and elegant squares...

Afternoon Tunis and its environs are a land-gobbling metropolis, so pack lightly and be prepared to cover some ground by (very cheap) taxis, ideally before you check in to the hotel. Hit the medina first, the heartbeat of the city founded by the...

“Some visitors say it’s like stepping back in time,” says Ralph Cades, owner of the Greencades boutique on the High Street. “Other seaside towns are a bit kiss-me-quick, but Deal is charm without the cheap thrills. It’s...

A dozen boats creak in the low-tide mud. Gulls guard orange-green nets slung out to dry around the harbour. Pensioners stand and stare, or gobble bowls of cockles. And, just up the cliff, my partner Russell and I are examining Tracey Emin’s...

“It’s like being in Palermo,” ventured my partner Russell, as he pushed open the window to its limited hilt, welcoming in the roar of traffic below. Our room, fuggy with sewage, could use some fresh air, and, as we lay tipsy on the stiff bed, sirens...
