Inspiring Travel Writing from Stanley Stewart

Stanley Stewart's books include 'Old Serpent Nile', an account of his journey from the mouth to the source of the White Nile, and 'Frontiers Of Heaven', about his journey across China from Shanghai to the Karakoram. The latter won the Thomas Cook/Daily Telegraph Travel Book Award. His most recent book is 'In The Empire Of Genghis Khan', the story of a thousand mile ride across Mongolia. He writes regularly for the Daily Telegraph and the Sunday Times where his work has won a clutch of awards.
Most of Stewart's journeys take him to the remoter parts of Asia and Africa, from lunch dates with the reindeer herders of Mongolia to a week's walk with Maasai herdsmen in the shadow of Oldoinyo Lengai. But he can also be found seeking stimulus in the traditional medicine shops of Hong Kong, dancing the tango in Paris and hanging out with rodeo cowboys in Wyoming.
Stanley Stewart was born in Ireland, grew up in Canada and lives in London.

Hong Kong City
In Hong Kong good health suddenly seemed so dull. The traditional medicine shops that thronged the side streets were irresistible palaces of the weird and the wonderful, full of exotic cures and fabulous ingredients. I longed for a witch's brew of...

In Outer Mongolia I had plenty of time to think about Paris. In nomads’ tents, over yet another bowl of sheep entrails, it is remarkable how often one’s thoughts turn to the Boulevard Saint-Germain and the Café de Flore. In these wild regions, Paris...

Clamber through the temple courts of Angkor Wat where the huge Buddha heads doze in a green gloom among the strangler figs. A still silent place at the centre of the turning world.

Mongolia
Ride across the Mongolian steppes where the wildflowers are as thick as Turkish carpets, the mornings smell of wild thyme and dung fires, and the world, unfenced, unsettled, untamed, seems new-born.

In the Northern Territories, hats have attitude. I had bought a fine Akuba in the best bush outfitters in Darwin, but no one was fooled. In these parts hats are not mere hats: they are biographies. Paul’s hat had been chewed by a crocodile. Tom’s...

At the rodeo you notice that horses and cowboys are kind of alike. Horses stand around a lot, flicking their tails, breaking wind, doing nothing in particular. Cowboys are like that. They lean on fences, looking at horses. Sometimes they spit,...

“I am here to save my husband,” the old woman said. Clouds blew through the doorway and eddied about her tiny bound feet. “Where is he?” I asked. “Hell,” she said. “He is in hell.” She drew a photograph from her bag and tipped it into the light: a...

It is the genius of Paris that it lives up to so many of its own clichés. Romantic, sophisticated, bohemian, glamorous, artistic, seductive, Paris is diverse and generous enough to satisfy them all. No city has been the subject of so many wistful...
