Inspiring Travel Writing from Sally Hewertson

Sally Hewertson
I expect my love of travel was fired up when my parents moved me from the leafy suburb of Richmond in South West London to Bangkok (bear in mind this was the mid-70s!) What a culture shock - but what a treat! From there we moved to Hong Kong and didn’t return to England until the mid-90s, and so my love of Asia was born.

I joined Steppes Travel in 2000 and have been fortunate enough to travel extensively, expanding my knowledge and keeping my admiration of and interest in other cultures ever-strong. My first love is Asia, from the awe-inspiring temples at Angkor to the village cricket grounds of rural Sri Lanka. Cycling down the Haa Valley in Bhutan will always be one of my greatest experiences, and a treasured memory.

Visiting Oman in 2004 was my introduction to the Middle East and a truly welcome surprise. Fabulous people and the varied landscape make this a must-visit destination. I also recently spent the most amazing weekend in Beirut, a city full of culture and history and brimming with sophisticated charm.

Russia continues to play a huge part in my travelling life. In my third visit I ventured further afield to explore what’s known as the Golden Ring, a circle of towns outside Moscow which are full of gold domed churches, working monasteries and rural idylls.

I expect my love of travel will never cease and look forward to continuing this precious affair.
