Inspiring Travel Writing from Norman Miller

After growing up in places as diverse as Hong Kong, Australia and Brazil before moving to Britain in his teens, it isn't too surprising Norman Miller has become a travel writer and photographer. He particularly loves poking around lesser known corners of Europe and the UK, prefering character over luxury.
Norman's travel writing has appeared in the London Evening Standard, Independent, Independent On Sunday, Time Out, Conde Nast Traveller, Wanderlust, Traveller, Daily Express, Sunday Express, Mail On Sunday, Scotland On Sunday, Harpers and REAL. He also writes about science, health, food & drink, arts and media, has written several plays and - along with half the journalists in London - is currently writing a novel.

New Zealand
New Zealand’s Northland begins about 100 miles north of Auckland, pushing its way up between the South Pacific and the Tasman Sea until the land peters out in the sand-dune encrusted peninsula known to the Maori as Te Hika o te Ika ("The tail...

Hawaii
In 1866 a relatively unknown journalist by the name of Samuel Clemens - better known now as Mark Twain - arrived in what were then the Sandwich Islands to write a series of Letters From Hawaii for the Sacramento Union newspaper. He intended to stay...

Everyone knows Amsterdam, right? Narrow gabled buildings looming over familiar canals lined with lovely little shops, cosy brown cafes, hookers in the windows, hookahs in the dope dens. But just a mile or so from Central Station, off the side of...

Belgium
For 362 days of the year, the Belgian town of Binche looks nothing like the sort of place which may have given the word ‘binge’ to the English language. There are places in the world you just expect to have rousing carnivals –...

Hebrides
Just getting to the Outer Hebrides is part of the fun, the little twin-prop from Glasgow skimming in a few feet above the sea before setting its wheels down onto the sand of the Cockle Strand, the wonderfully-named beach that's been the airport on...

When a beautiful woman walks towards you across a dancefloor carrying a knife you show respect. I join those around me in bowing my head and holding my hands up as both a gesture of peace and symbolic shield. "She is Oxum," whispers my friend Joao...

Finland
It was 1984 when two Finns fuelled by beer and steam hatched an idea for a tango festival while sitting in a sauna. It must have seemed a good idea at the time - and it still is to the 100,000 people who, each July, trek to Seinajoki - an otherwise...

I start getting nervous before I even get to Iceland. “One second with rotten shark in your mouth is an experience you will never forget - no matter how hard you try” says the in-flight mag. I steel myself. For centuries, Iceland has...

Brittany
The past can often seem a faded place once bright colours leach from ancient stone and outlines dim on old cloth or wood. But each year a festival in Britanny sets out to reinvigorate visions of the past with those of today. Every summer since 1992...

Dunnet Head
Dunnet Head is truly Britain’s top spot. Standing near Scotland’s northeast corner, I'm further north than Moscow, and definitely further north than John O'Groats a dozen miles to the east, the geographical impostor that attracts coach parties and...
