Inspiring Travel Writing from Melissa Rossi

Melissa Rossi, a contributing editor for National Geographic Traveler, has been published in American magazines from Newsweek to Esquire. She has also written several books, including a biography of the loud-mouthed Mrs Cobain, ?Courtney Love: Queen of Noise? (1996), which prompted Melissa to become a world traveller to avoid Courtney?s (potentially) flying fist. A sufferer of Urban Attention Disorder ? she can?t focus on one city for long ? Melissa lives in Madrid, this week. She is currently at work on a travel book for lone wanderers called ?Global Party Crasher? and a novel about a goldfish.

Copenhagen
There was an icy nip in the Danish air, and I didn’t have a coat, but so what: I was finally in Copenhagen, copperdomed and clocktowered city I’d wanted to see since age three, after first watching the movie of Danny Kaye skipping down...

Take a trip in the Romanian countryside to Bran Castle. Traffic jams of sheep and cows only add to the appeal of the lost-in-time countryside where the spindly towers of the castle that was inspiration for Dracula peeks through thick forests....

Avignon
Provence: land of swirling sunflower paintings, swaying lavender fields, velvety wine, men who look like Kevin Kline. Its very name is poetic in that words-spilling-over-your-lips French way. Oh, and I was filled with dreamy notions about the region...

Architectural showcase and bustling Mediterranean port, this is Spain’s second largest city - shown up, population-wise at least, only by Madrid, with whom it entertains an obvious rivalry. Barcelona is the capital of Catalonia, an autonomous...

It’s 9:00pm on a Saturday and in Plaza Mayor, Madrid’s handsome, loggia-wrapped square, a crowd gathers around a young gypsy lad who is formidably stomping and twirling flamenco style in front of the pastel facades and umbrella-ed cafes. Several...

Portofino
As wild a party town as it may once have been, contemporary Florence isn't exactly giving Manhattan a run for its money in the dining out and night life departments. After a week in the stony Renaissance city, it can feel as snoozy as Iowa, though...

Madrid
To say that Madrid is the heart of Spain is an understatement. In the 16th century, King Philip II transformed the former Moorish fort into the capital precisely because it is geographically the midpoint of Spain. But the lively city of fountains,...
