Inspiring Travel Writing from Mark Jolly

Mark Jolly is a contributing editor for Condé Nast Traveler (U.S. edition), and his feature writing - on all aspects of contemporary culture - has appeared in numerous publications, including The New York Times, New York, Gourmet, Details, The Times and The Guardian. He started out in journalism at Oxford, where he edited Isis, the university magazine.
After an 11-year leave of absence spent in Spain, Mexico, Argentina and, mostly, New York, Jolly has returned home to London. Yet as the product of English-Iranian parents, and having lived in three continents, he considers himself a world citizen.

I like to consider myself a world citizen. A citizen of the world. Somebody who's traversed the ends of the earth and has always felt at home. I've prayed with Burmese monks and seen the early morning sun scale the nippled pagodas of Mandalay. I...

"Do you have a fantasy?" I get asked this question a lot during the days running up to carnival. And I'm never quite sure how to respond. The first couple of times, I assume I’m being propositioned, Brazilian style. This is, after all, the place...

Baja, Mexico: The remote corridor between La Paz and Loreto is just about the only place off the coast of California - either America or Mexico - where you can cruise 80-something miles and not see a soul. Just a sprinkling of palapa shacks, a few...

New Delhi, India. Houses of the holy are meant to dislocate you from the whirligig of modern life. Amid the nuttiness that is New Delhi, the Baha’i Lotus temple does this and then some: it is an architectural miracle, whose giant marble petals...

Llao Llao. So nice they named it twice. In fact, they built it twice. Argentina’s most celebrated hotel, first constructed in 1938 by the legendary Alejandro Bustillo, was a monument to the natural world, a colossus of carved stone, encased inside...
