Inspiring Travel Writing from Lee Marshall

Born in Clevedon in 1961, Lee Marshall has lived in Rome since 1984. He went there straight from Cambridge to avoid getting a serious job; the avoidance continues to this day. Travelling and writing about it takes up much of his time; very occasionally he allows himself the luxury of travelling without writing about it. He is a contributing editor of Conde Nast Traveller, and has edited the Time Out guides to Venice and the South of France. He also writes on cinema for, among others, Screen International and the Independent.

Oh, the effortless elegance of rail travel. White linen in the dining car, watching the sun set over the Tuscan coast, then golden slumbers all the way to Paris, lulled by the clackety-clack of the wheels on the track. My family, when I outlined...

Witness mountain peaks emerging like islands from a sea of cloud. I've seen this a handful of times from the ground (aerial views don't count); most memorably from a snowy ridge in the Sierra Nevada, south of Granada. Lee Marshall

Career down the Cresta Run in a bobsleigh in a state of alcohol- and drug-induced stupor. No, I haven't done it either, but I certainly mean to before the final curtain. Quite possibly during and after as well. Lee Marshall

Como/Menaggio
Como is the most beautiful of the Italian lakes. There, I’ve said it; somebody had to. It is also a lake which in the savage beauty of its green and white shores, in the way the wind whips the surface into wayward textures, in the way it is very...

Amalfi
Amalfi coast residents say that being good is no fun. You live in paradise, you die, you go to heaven. At least with the Other Place you get a change of scenery. It wasn't always the Garden of Eden along here. Sure, figs and olives drop off the...

Rome
It would be nice to claim that it was the eternal pull of art and beauty that brought me to Rome thirteen years ago. In fact, it was the toss of a coin. At the time, I was living in a student flat in Cambridge, getting stuck into that post-degree...
