Inspiring Travel Writing from Jini Reddy

The daughter of South Africans of Indian descent, Jini was born in England, but grew up in Montreal, Canada. She graduated from McGill University with a degree in Geography, whereupon - fed up with the sub-zero winters - she fled to the south of France. Here she (ostensibly) studied some more, before embarking on a career in publishing. A four-year stint as a copywriter for Penguin Books in the UK and a slog as an editor for Macmillan in Hong Kong left her hankering after a more flexible lifestyle. Now she's based in south west London and works as a freelance journalist.
Her travel writing has appeared in most of the national broadsheets in the UK and a variety of magazines, among them TIME, Geographical, The Spectator, The FTs How to Spend It, BBC Wildlife and Harpers and Queen. She has also written for newspapers and glossies abroad, including DestinAsian, Hong Kong Tatler and the UAEs The National.
In truth, her passion for travel is fuelled by a yen to forge friendships in all corners of the world. She relishes getting off-the-beaten track, discovering new landscapes and learning about local customs, foods and spiritual practices.

On the map of Australia, the Cape York Peninsula looks like a small, wonky witch's hat in the far north-east – but England could slide into it with room to spare. The region's coastal dunes, forests and mountain scenery are starkly beautiful;...

I don’t know if it is the shirt – opened to reveal a bare chest, the crucifixes round his neck, the dark sunglasses (even though the day is overcast) or the overpowering aftershave, but when I meet the man who is to guide me along the...

High in the little-explored Knuckles Range of Sri Lanka, a grassroots tourism project is helping to sustain and preserve the traditional ways of a dwindling village community. Walking uphill in the pouring rain with leeches nipping at your ankles...

Chhattisgarh may be India’s 26th state, but if you’ve not heard of it, you’re in good company – it remains almost as much of a mystery to the rest of the subcontinent. Carved out of Madhya Pradesh in 2000, this landlocked...

I’m walking, as if through treacle, up and up the mountain foothills. Behind me, shimmers Issy Kul, the world’s second largest alpine lake. It’s so blue, so vast, it seems as though a chunk of the sky has fallen down. Suddenly a...

There’s a nice, cushioned back rest, and a helmet with a visor to protect me from the wind, yet I can still smell the ocean-scented air. I’m heading along Nova Scotia’s south shore, from Mahone Bay – where Madonna’s yacht has been spotted – to...

In the hour since I arrived at the Shanti Ananda Maurice, Mauritius’ only destination spa (and younger sibling to the much raved-about Ananda in the Himalayas). I’ve sipped the first of dozens of ginger-lemon teas, hurled myself onto the...

As I plunge into Mumbai’s Bhuleshwar Bazaar, a narrow warren of lanes known to locals as Mirchi Market, I hang on to my guide for dear life. I’ve arrived just before Diwali, the Hindu Festival of Lights, and the crowds are even thicker than usual....
