Inspiring Travel Writing from Jasper Winn

Jasper Winn is a writer, photographer, broadcaster and filmmaker with specialist interests in world music, horses, the peoples of remote regions, bizarre festivals, and anything off-beat. He writes regularly for The Evening Standard, CN Traveller, Geographical, The Times and The Independent on Sunday. He broadcasts for the BBC and RTE and has made and presented travel documentaries for C4.
Jasper has cycled across the Sahara, West Africa and India, and canoed from Dublin to the Mediterranean by river, and the length of the Danube. He has travelled by horse in Iran, Mexico, Morocco, Ireland, Venezuela, Cuba and many other countries. For a year, as a Winston Churchill Trust Fellow, he travelled 2,000 kilometers on foot and by mule with a Moroccan Berber nomadic family and their sheep and camels.
He is a frequent lecturer for the RSGS, The British Council and national travel shows. He is currently writing a book on horse-based peoples worldwide.

In another lifetime, I was a travelling musician playing ragtime and swing songs in obscure corners of Europe. My act was billed, when it was billed at all, as 'songs about chickens, cowboys and Jesus,' thereby, in one fell swoop, intriguing,...

Last August I was one of five Persians and four Westerners - three women and six men - who set off to recce a route by jeep through the deserts, mountains and 'emptylands' of north and north-east Iran. Zohreh Majidian wanted a new, remote trip for...

Take any faintly ludicrous late 20th century popular pastime. In-line skating, say. Just how likely is it that anybody's still going to be cavorting around on a pair of wheeled-up boots in five thousand years' time?Yet, that's about how long...

For the wannabe shipwright, the Book of Genesis contains fairly complete instructions for building your own boat. According to God, a pile of resinous wood, a bundle of reeds and some pitch caulking can be swiftly knocked up into a pretty useful...

Bicycles are like trousers. Yes, they are! Well, okay, obviously not exactly. In fact...um, well...actually, not at all, really.Except in one significant way. People seem to buy them both - bikes and strides - in similar ways. For far too many folk...

Those poor old Amsterdamers have had alcohol forced on them. If it weren’t for their laudable interest in hygiene the Dutch would all be sober, teetotal H²O tipplers. Or so they claim. But a few centuries back (and when I last looked as well) the...

Patagonia’s a bit of a long way to go for a walk. In fact I’d guess that most British trekkers think of Patagonia, when it troubles their minds at all, as a handy metaphor for off-this-planet, never-coming-back remoteness. Which is understandable...

The Chinese have an ancient saying; ‘a journey of a thousand miles starts with one footstep.’ Not being Chinese, my experience is that nearly every journey, regardless of distance, seems to start with a taxi ride to Cork airport. And...

"If horses were stupid, they'd bet on humans," someone once said. But i'll bet (would you take three to one...two to one...evens?) that saying it didn't stop that same someone bunging another wodge of hard-earned notes on the next nag tipped as a '...

Years ago I had friend who put himself through university, or at least through the drinking that went with university, by regular wins at the racetrack. He had family contacts in the industry, got good tips and he knew a bit about horses and a lot...
