Inspiring Travel Writing from Jamie Dunford Wood

Jamie Dunford Wood, founder of Travel Intelligence, has spent much of his life travelling: from early voyages across the sands of the Sahara and up the Niger to Timbuktou, to one of the last of the 'Magic Buses' to run the route from the Charing Cross Road to Delhi, from jail in Morocco to the snows of Kilamanjaro. In between his own travels he worked in the film business, but his yearning for travel eventually took him back on the road permanently, working as a guide for a number of major tour companies. He led groups of tourists through the remoter regions of Central Asia, up the Yangste and along the more well trodden paths of Western Europe. More recently he has launched worldreviewer.com, an award-winning site reviewing the best travel experiences in the world.

Gabon
There has been a lot of talk recently on the wisdom of selling arms to non-democratic countries - and naturally much cursing the French. The following is an account of a trip I made to Gabon, another 'oil-dictatorship' in another part of world,...

Vienna
A pale shadow of its former Imperial glory, Vienna still has something to offer, but you need to be clear about what that is. If you’re an opera or classical music or Lippizaner fan, you’ll want to come, and if you’re into the...

Venice
You either love it or you hate it, but it’s a must see because there’s nowhere else like Venice. You love it for the romanticism, the sense of walking in history, and the photographs you’ll get. As Truman Capote once said, it’s like eating whole...

In summer Florence is hot, dusty and crowded with tourists, and in winter it can be icy. Sitting as it does in a bowl in the Chianti hills, weather effects are magnified. But tourists have been coming here for centuries because of the Renaissance...

Morocco has exploded as a hotel destination in the past few years, both for its moderate political temperature, its hint of exoticism, its proximity to Europe, and its range of charming townhouse accomodation - the Riads. Not a month goes by without...

Salzburg
This classic 19thC Salzburg hotel has been run by the Gurtler family, of Sacher fame, since 1988, hence the nudge towards the name change, but for many it will for ever be the Hof. Well positioned next to the river with views of the castle, the...

The Hotel Kobenzl is a wonderfully positioned hotel in the mountains way above Salzburg may not be everybody's cup of tea. Decorwise it can be eccentric, with table mounted water features in the cosy sitting room/bar, various country craft ornaments...
