Inspiring Travel Writing from Daniel Scott

Daniel Scott is an award-winning travel writer who is based at Boomerang Beach on the New South Wales coast in Australia.
His career has spanned over fourteen years and five continents and has included a five year spell in Europe. He specialises in adventure travel and has written about diving in locations such as Tahiti, Milford Sound in New Zealand and off the coasts of Australia. On one expedition, led by Rodney Fox, off South Australian coast, he came face to face with several Great White Sharks and on another dive encountered the tiny leafy sea dragon off Esperance, in Western Australia.
Top-end luxury travel is also an area of expertise and two untaxing assignments have involved him visiting 36 of the world's leading hotels in nine cities on three continents, as well as road-testing the First Class cabins of six top airlines.
On radio, Daniel has worked on both of Australia's top commercial radio stations, 2GB and 2UE in Sydney and is currently a regular contributor to the ABC. He has also appeared on the BBC Radio 5 programme 'Up All Night'. On the web, you can read his regular travel blog at travelaustralia.ninemsn.com.au.
Daniel's also runs 'Introduction to Travel Writing' courses all around the world. The course is designed to give participants a real working knowledge of the travel writing industry, based on his fourteen years of experience. Courses will be running in the Alpujarra mountains in southern Spain in late May 2008 and in Australia in the latter part of the year. For more information, email danscott26@yahoo.co.uk.

Strangely, there is no fear. As we anchor ourselves onto the reef, a total of eight large silvertips now surround us. A flurry of excited bubbles rises from our mouths as the sharks jink and circle around us in an almost choreographed whirl. They...

"Do you know what I love about this city?" asks Mark reflectively, at 5.30am, on a balcony overlooking the concourse of Madrid’s astonishing Atocha station: "The squares, the outdoor life, places to dawdle and gawp, bars to flit through on the way...

Danube Valley
Early afternoon, late European summer time. I'm cycling softly down an asphalt track. The air is thick with heat, a tiny motion-created breeze cooling me. Below the track to my right, a barge sporting a red, white and blue flag is pushing upstream...

I’m shaking so much I’d give unset jelly a bad name. Below me circling somewhere beneath the swell are the lumpen outlines of not one but two 15 ft Great White Sharks. Ahead of me, lifting and dipping in the chop, is an open metal cage....

It’s always seemed slightly bizarre to me to hear Bing Crosby’s “I’m dreaming of a white Christmas” creeping around Southern Hemisphere hotel lobbies in December, but if you’re visiting Fiji during this month,...

If only we’d read the skipper’s handbook when we picked up our narrowboat then we wouldn’t be in the process of flooding half of Middle England: “Beware of helpers! They are usually other boaters who want you through the...

Behind you is the virtually uninhabited coast near the tip of Cape York and beneath you what looks like an aquatic moonscape: the deep darkness of the Coral Sea mottled by patches of cooler blue surrounding hundreds of shallow fudge-coloured reefs,...

Mike holds the snake just long enough for me to survey her delicate bands of white and golden orange. Then, before she gets too cranky, he lets her slide away up the rocky bank. In the Northern Territory, as I am discovering, small is beautiful. It...

I am not by nature an adventurous person. I am sitting here at my desk in Bondi contemplating a rain-strewn winter’s day. I am wrapped in a balm of slightly cluttered suburban tranquility, and I like it that way. I like my routines. My lemon juice...
