Buenos Aires
Paradise is a dimly lit dance hall in San Telmo, Buenos Aires’ oldest barrio. In front of me is a bottle of rough, deep red Malbec that cost about five pesos (less than a pound) and, drunk on romance and melancholy, I’m lost in a tango blur. Beyond...

At Mendoza bus station, there are two types of tourist. The first and, from my vantage point, the most heroic, are lean, intrepid backpackers bound for Cerro Aconcagua - at 6,960 metres (22,834 feet), the “roof of the Americas” and the highest peak...

Imagine a town off the beaten, budget, backpacker or any other kind of track that melds the languorous sensuality of Brazil, the all-day sunshine of Cancún and the Europhile sophistication of downtown Buenos Aires. Throw in barbecued beef...

Driving along the A6, it’s not immediately obvious that the Peak District might well be England’s most important national park. In fact, it’s easy to forget you’re in a park at all - there are plenty of pretty towns and old farms lining the river...

Peru
'Mula, carajo, mula!" is what Peruvian muleteers shout to drive their beasts up and down the Andean mountains of the Vilcabamba region. No English expression quite captures the fricative force of "carajo", but "damn you, mule" is about right. For a...

Tokaj-Hegyalja
'I think I'd like to be embalmed in Tokaj," moaned Bridget, who was sitting to my right. We'd been in Hungary all of two hours and were dining (and more importantly drinking) in Gundel, Budapest's grandest restaurant. Having ooh'd and ahh'd our way...

Setting out on their gap year odysseys to Latin America, it’s unlikely students bother to glance up at the scarlet and black posters of “Che” Guevara stapled on their chimney breasts. They may identify with the handsome Argentine for his romantic...

Outside the village of Monodendri, in the heart of the Zagoria region, you can walk along a precipitous ledge above the gorge and peer across to where the horizon is cracked open, or look down into the abyss. In autumn, the ever-present drama of...
