Ululru-Kata Tjuta National Park
When a front tyre burst, I thought events could get no worse. Things had looked ominous as our plane landed at Alice Springs, and we were handed umbrellas for the short walk to the terminal building. We had arrived at the driest part of the...

Glencoe
I was only slightly above the 1000-metre contour, yet I was puffing and wheezing as though I were four times as high. I should have been running up the final gentle slope to the summit. Instead, I was crawling, and having to sit down in the snow...

Cairns
We first glimpsed the atolls from five miles high. Turquoise patches stitched onto a green sheet, and beneath us, the even darker green of the rain forest. Cairns is a thriving town with a population of about 70 000. It is spread out across a strip...

Ireland
The Atlantic coast of Ireland, 300 miles in a direct line from Malin Head to Mizen Head, is an unbroken succession of jagged headlands, fiord-like inlets and craggy islands. Since the retreat of the ice-age glaciers, these bulwarks have stood...
