Cambodia
Angkor Watt, Cambodia. The most extraordinary and atmospheric ruin one could hope to see. Cambodia’s recent tragic history merely heightens the sense of achievement - and loss - of an ancient and artistic people.

Karakoram Highway, China/Pakistan. This branch of the Silk Road is my favourite journey. The astonishing scenery alone justifies the trip, but the region’s delicate geopolitics and knot of diverse peoples give it an edge that’s hard to...

Esfahan
Esfahan, Iran. 'Esfahan is half the world' according to an ancient Persian proverb. It certainly boasts some of the Islamic world’s most beautiful monuments with their mosaic glazed tilework, and memorable cafes tucked into the archives of...

"Chameleon my friend, chameleon!" said the stall-holder and he really meant it. This was no term of abuse. Clinging to his palm with hook-like feet was one of these bizarre little lizards, its eyes rotating independently. Here in Taroudannt, some...

Chugging past cane fields on the fringes of Cairns, I let Buda-dji, the carpet snake, lead the way. Aboriginal legends tell how he carved out the Barron River Gorge, bartering nautilus shells for eel traps. But, ambushed, chopped and scattered, just...

Kailash
Shiva's headquarters are said to lie high and aloof amidst the mighty Himalaya, yet I was bound for his branch office. It is atop Mt Kailash in southwest Tibet that he is said to indulge in narcotics and cavort with his lusty consort. Shiva has long...
