The Most Romantic Hotels and Resorts for Couples by Leo Bear
UK & Europe
The George in Rye, Sussex
This charming 16th-century coach house set in the pretty coastal town of Rye is a traditionally English couples’ getaway. Just two hours from London, you can enjoy strolling hand in hand along the shore at Camber Sands or mosey around the perfectly preserved cobbled streets browsing antiques shops. Back at the hotel, you’ll feast like kings in the George’s chic restaurant, popular with visitors and locals alike. Roast venison or Old Spot pork belly and sticky toffee pudding are menu staples, and after dinner there are sink-in-and-smile armchairs perfect for an evening of board games and competitive riling in front of the fire.

Asia
Park Hyatt, Shanghai
This exotic newcomer is currently the highest hotel in the world. Set on the 79th floor of the Shanghai World Financial Centre, the views over Pudong are nothing short of spectacular. Shanghai has a major buzz about it at the moment and this hotel could well be generating much of it. The gizmos in your room alone are something to rave about (electronic curtains, loos with blow-dry facilities for your private parts and an ‘infinity’ bath that overflows while you loofah), and the rest of the hotel doesn’t disappoint either. Its spa, Water’s Edge, is one of the calmest and most beautiful in Asia with a 20m glittering infinity pool and cotton waffle daybeds overlooking the contrastingly chaotic streets hundreds of feet below. Try a sunrise Tai Chi class if you can drag yourselves out of bed.

Middle East
Kempinski Hotel Ishtar Dead Sea, Jordan
Rising above the white crystal-encrusted rocks that line the Dead Sea, the Kempinski Ishtar has an otherworldly feel about it. Built like a modern Arabian palace with a Mediterranean twist – its courtyards feature 100-year-old olive trees imported from Italy – it is immaculately conceived. You could spend all day wafting from bar to bar, pool to pool, but the Dead Sea is all about healing and wellbeing, so it’s imperative that you smother each other with sloppy natural mud on the beach, wait for it to dry, then bob around in the super-buoyant sea allowing the magical salts to do their stuff. You’ll emerge feeling ten years younger – and friskier.

Australia
Lilianfels Blue Mountains Resort and Spa, Katoomba
Just a short drive from Sydney, the Blue Mountains is a picturesque escape for couples in search of adventure, and there’s no better place to stay than this historic country house overlooking the misty hue of the mountains. A member of the Orient-Express group, standards are exceptionally high and the restaurant serves nothing but the finest gourmet food. Best of all though are the activities on offer: a visit to the three sisters rock formations, a ride along the steepest railway in the world, a cable-car journey 960 feet above the Jamison valley, caving – take your pick. Or if you’d prefer some quiet time, get the hotel to pack you a picnic and head off along one of the many walking trails just minutes from the doorstep.

US & Caribbean
Chamberlain West Hollywood, Los Angeles
This is an ideal base if you’re looking for a hip Hollywood hangout to explore LA’s sights from. Here you don’t need a car, you can walk to restaurants brimming with breathy up-and-coming actors or check out a gig at the Troubadour, one of Kate Moss’s favourite venues. The rooms are generous even by US standards with mossy colour palettes, oversized lamps and gas log-fires that make you feel right at home. From the chic rooftop pool, to the intimate art deco bistro and dramatic lobby, this hotel is fashion-shoot ready from top to bottom.
Best for: Couples looking for glamour

Africa
Nwichi Lodge, Mozambique
This eco-friendly hideaway boasts one of the best beaches in the world – the word ‘nkwichi’ actually means ‘squeaky sand’ in the local dialect. Not only that, but you’re swimming in fresh water because the lodge is on the shores of Lake Malawi, the fourth largest lake in Africa. There’s nothing commercial about this place, not a building in sight; you could be the only people on the planet. There are only seven chalets, allowing a maximum of 14 guests at any time, and each thatched-roof chalet is a honeymooner’s dream. Spread generously along the beach, each has a four-poster bed carved out of local tree trunks and muslin curtains which flutter over open-air windows. At night, lanterns line the sandy paths and drinks are served around a cracking bonfire, so there is a chance to talk to socialise, if you want to that is…
