Sustainable Bainbridge Island - Green Weekend Getaway by Shelley Seale

It is no secret we humans live in critical times. The choices we make now, both individually and collectively, will have profound consequences for generations to come. Sustainable Bainbridge was formed to support cooperation and collaboration among a broad-based network of local organizations, businesses, government and individuals to protect and strengthen our community's social, environmental, and economic sustainability for current and future generations.

Like many great ideas, Sustainable Bainbridge is a natural outcome of the efforts of many people. It grew organically after a 2006 Earth Day presentation by author David Korten ("The Great Turning: From Empire to Earth Community"), which was sponsored by more than a dozen island groups including the City Of Bainbridge Island. Following that sold-out event, Mayor Darlene Kordonowy hosted three brown bag lunches at city hall in order to tap the sustainability needs and concerns of the community.

A scenic 30-minute ferry ride from downtown Seattle, Bainbridge Island has rustic charm with quiet country roads and lovely gardens making this a favorite destination. Known for its arts community, Bainbridge has its own Performing Arts Center and Arts & Crafts Gallery featuring regional artists.

Enjoy shopping in historic Winslow with its trendy cafes and one of a kind island shops where you can find unusual gifts from the Northwest and beyond. Outdoor enthusiast will enjoy a walk through the Bloedel Reserve, and nature lover's paradise. Other fun outdoor activities include hiking, biking, equestrian trails, golf and tennis. From Bainbridge Island you can cross the Agate Pass Bridge to the Kitsap Peninsula.
