The affordable alternative to La Residencia, S’Hotel d’es Puig is perfect for those who want to come to Deià but don’t have the bulging bank balances necessary for staying over the road at the big place. In some ways, the Puig is more charming – with just 8 rooms, this place is utterly unpretentious and very friendly. Artists and writers have been staying here since the turn of last century when D H Lawrence and chums used to flock here for inspiration from the green hills and sparkling sea. Although the rooms now have private bathrooms and televisions, they are still decorated simply in traditional Mallorcan style – some looking out over La Residencia and the sea, others towards the village and hills. Two rooms at the back have balconies and there is a suite on the top floor, all with white walls and sporting the ubiquitous green shutters. Downstairs the tile-floored reception area leads through to the breakfast room, leading on to a shady patio where you can linger with your coffee in the morning. There is a smallish pool out the back with deckchairs, and a patch of crunchy Mediterranean grass. The staff is friendly, the comments in the guest book complimentary and the people by the pool looked happy – what more could you ask for?
