The Shizuka Ryokan by Susan Miles
Nestled amongst the secluded bushlands, the Shizuka Ryokan has been designed in the style of a traditional Japanese guesthouse. Visitors are invited to leave their stress (& their shoes!) at the door, slip into pair of slippers, a flowing Yakata and think of Kyoto!
Each of the six guest suites is furnished traditional style, with futon beds rolled out onto tatami matt floors, shoji rice paper screens and takonoma alcoves dressed with elegant scroll artwork and Ikebana flower arrangements. But before you get too comfy, there is a four course banquet, served by attentive staff, to enjoy in the privacy of your suite. Dishes include tempura, soba noodles, sushi and sashimi with choice of Japanese beer, sake as or local wine and beer.
At breakfast you can continue the Japanese theme with a traditional breakfast of miso soup, pumpkin, rice, fish and pickled vegetables. However western style dishes such as pancakes and eggs are also on the menu.
But this is Hepburn Springs, spa country! The Shizuka Ryokan therefore offers a spa menu that includes soothing shiatsu, relaxing reiki and refreshing facials that utilize anti-oxidant rich white tea, calming camellia oil and a Geisha favourite, nightingale droppings.
