Riad Fès by Joanna Monkhouse

The souq in Fez is well known for being a labyrinth, and with over 9000 lanes it is impossible not to become disorientated when wandering around. Finding Riad Fès is a little like going on a treasure hunt, following the blue tiled signs like clues.

When eventually the big wooden door opens, you enter a huge covered courtyard, beautifully decorated in the traditional Fassi style. The architect owner spent a year and a half faithfully renovating the house and the result is magnificent. The 17 palatial rooms and suites are filled with antique furniture and fabrics, walls are tiled and ceilings carved, ensuite bathrooms have traditional tadelakt covered walls.

From the riad’s breezy roof terrace you can view the maze of the medina stretched below. There is also a small swimming pool, a rooftop jacuzzi and gym. In a city of 12000 palaces, staying in Riad Fès provides an authentic experience.
