Raphael by Joanna Monkhouse

The Raphael is well located just behind Piazza Navona, ideally placed for discovering both sides of the river. The entrance of the ivy-clad building leads to the eccentric mix of antiques including authentic Picasso ceramics in the lobby. More eclectic décor is found in restaurant – tables are laid with large multicoloured plates. The roof terrace has two levels and serves lunch and dinner, with good views of Piazza Navona’s spires and beyond. Breakfast is served in main restaurant, not up on the roof which seems shame. There is a fitness room in the basement, along with a couple of meeting rooms. The so called 'classic' rooms have scary décor with metallic purple bathroom tiles, stencilled friezes around top of walls and way too many colours. 'Modern' rooms are more neutral with white marble bathrooms. The suites sport gigantic tvs and dvds. Newest rooms (currently under renovation) have been designed by ultra-minimalist architect Richard Meyer – results are eagerly anticipated.
