Very simple but spectacularly located hotel in the cradle of mankind, this old mill house stands just off the main street of one-horse-village Les Eyzies, nestled on the banks of the mill stream with simple rooms and fabulous cooking. The rooms are *very* simple, mostly looking out onto the courtyard approach, although two rooms overlook onto the mill stream. The rooms on the ground and first floor are smallish but bright will tall windows - on the ground floor terracotta tiled, upstairs wood. The beds are low and basic, the fabrics simple check prints, the furniture peasant antique but pretty enough, while the bathrooms are generally tiny. The 2nd floor rooms in the eaves are bigger, but have smaller windows. But who cares? For the price, you are a guest in a ramshackle mill house with a gastronomic restaurant attached - 'Au Vieux Moulin' - so half board looks good value: for the price of a meal you get a room thrown in. When the restaurant's closed they make you a picnic. A dog called Poopi snaps at your heels when you enter, and the receptionist sits behind a rickety desk. Outside, a small lawn and terrace leads down to the racing stream. Leave your window open at night and be soothed to sleep by the sound of the water. Not for luxury seekers, but very restful. 20 rooms only. Charming, and certainly more authentic than the somewhat overdone Relais and Chateaux 'Le Centenaire' 100 yards away.
