Moroccan Hotels by Jamie Dunford Wood

Morocco has exploded as a hotel destination in the past few years, both for its moderate political temperature, its hint of exoticism, its proximity to Europe, and its range of charming townhouse accomodation - the Riads. Not a month goes by without a new one opening up - which is why travellers to the region should exercise caution and seek advice about the best ones to stay in.

Many are run by foreigners - not always a sure recommendation. Some have a/c, most don't, nor do many offer much in the way of amenities or meals. The key is the care with which they have been restored and furnished - a trip to the souk to buy a few hubbly bubblies with a couple of rugs strung from the wall is not going to cut it. As for payment, many do not accept credit cards, while others require pre-payment by bank draft - a hassle and sometimes a risk.

So, more so than Europe or the States, recommendation is what counts here.
