L'Hotel by Chloe Loyd

Conveniently located behind Harrods, L’Hotel is the smaller, rather poorer, sister hotel of The Capital next door. Not quite attaining the category of boutique hotel, this more modest abode caters for the self-sufficient guest who prefers a relaxed, informal, rather basic B&B. The staff is friendly and helpful, though not always around. However, the concierge services at the Capital are available at all times, as is use of parking facilities there.

The pine furniture, slatted shutters, rocking chairs and faded beige material walls lend the rooms a well-used feel where no hint of extra luxuries, or pretension, is in evidence. Ask for a fireplace room, as these are bigger (the others are a little poky), though don’t be surprised that the fires won’t work. The best room is the cosy attic suite but do watch your head in the shower if you are taller than average.

With no public rooms, extra amenities are limited. However, a leisurely breakfast of freshly baked pastries and newspapers can be enjoyed at Le Metro bistro in the basement next door which is under the same ownership. This cheerful cafe also offers affordable home-cooked light meals and wine from the owner’s vineyard in France. Be sure to book over the lunch period as it is a deservedly popular haven for Knightsbridge shoppers and workers.

A frank and no-frills place, worth considering for the more laid-back traveller who wants to stay in the heart of Knightsbridge without being too out of pocket.
