Kiwayu - the Original Barefoot Luxury Camp by Will Jones

Probably the original ‘barefoot luxury’ camp, Kiwayu offers the traveller an exceptional wilderness beach experience. One does not often associate solitude with luxury beach holidays but here, on the remote and distant northern shores of the Kenya Coast, Kiwayu is able provide both in abundance. Many seasoned travellers swear by Kiwayu and the camp has certainly built a loyal following.

The rooms are open to the elements and built of simple, local building material – wood, thatch and palm. All rooms are scattered around a sweeping bay sandwiched between the Dodori Nature Reserve in-land and marine reserve off-shore.

The food is influenced by Italian ownership and will include fresh seafood, imported cheeses from Europe and a good selection of fine wines.

For the honeymooner or family looking for complete isolation Kiwayu also service a small cottage set just off-shore from the Camp. The cottage, known as the Baobabs of Kitungani, offers exclusive bookings and staff and is well worth the experience.

The best time of the year to visit Kiwayu and the Baobabs of Kitungani is during the kaskazi monsoon which blows October through to March.
