Hotel Villa Real by Matthew Barker

Opened in 1989, but big on classical 19th century Spanish architecture: all fancy-dan columns, buffed-up marble and period furniture (there’s also a celebrated collection of 3rd century AD Roman mosaics). A tad more business-minded that other spots nearby, but ah, location, location, location. 115 rooms.

Facilities:So-so restaurant and coffee shop; buffets in a tented-pavilion are rather fun. The fitness centre hosts the usual jacuzzi-sauna-pool aqua-pamper triplet; duplex and royal suites come equipped with their own jacuzzi.

Local Attractions:The Prado, Thyssen and Reina Sofia Museums are all close at hand; ditto the Royal Opera House and the Spanish Parliament. Foodies should make a beeline for three-starred Zalacain, the Cabo Mayo or the Posada de la Villa for cocina Madrilena and the myriad tapas options dotted about; designer-bag ladies will appreciate Jesus del Pozo and Sybilla.
