Hotel U Brány by Jenny Pidgeon

U Brány means ‘Gate House’, reflecting the location of this hotel close to the main gate of Prague Castle, on the cobbled Nerudova street which leads up from Mala Strana. What marks this hotel apart from the many others in its vicinity is the surprising size of its guestrooms. Accommodation is offered in spacious two to four-bedroom apartments which are perfect for families or groups of friends; it’s like having your own flat in the centre of Prague.

One enters the hotel through a tacky giftshop on the main drag, but the main staircase is pleasantly plant-filled and the ten apartments are airy and clean. White walls and exposed wooden beams are found in all the rooms; entrance hall, sitting room, large bedrooms and bathrooms. The decoration is simple with a few slightly dubious artworks on the walls. Whilst comfortable, the furniture is faded-modern and nothing special, but all the rooms are well-appointed with safe, minibar and television. The largest apartment is in the attic, overlooking the castle.

On the ground floor is a colourful, buzzing restaurant and down in the basement there is a winebar and internet café. The staff is friendly and helpful. For longer stays in Prague, U Brány is a great choice.
