Hotel Le Clement by Jamie Dunford Wood

First impressions
This family-run two star with a pretty townhouse facade just off the Boulevard St Germain and a stone's throw from the church had a face-lift in 2005. It has two main virtues, apart from the friendly welcome: first, it has efficient a/c, which at this price is not always guaranteed, and Paris seems to be getting hotter in the summer; and second, it faces the most wonderful covered neighbourhood market, where you can go for a range of fresh fruit, cheeses, meat and fish. Under the market is a car park - handy for those driving through en route elsewhere, and a large municipal pool which costs just a couple of euros to take advantage of.

The rooms
Standards are small but bright - go for the larger 'mini junior suites' for not alot extra. These have tall windows and face the street - though late at night there can be some bar noise in summer, traffic is light as this is a side street. Furnishings are in dark bamboo - dull but clean looking, with pretty wall lights and florid little bathrooms. Window boxes add a nice touch. You will be guaranteed a quiet night on the interior court side, but here you lose light as well as space.

The reception area is large and elegantly wood panelled, worthy of a smarter boutique hotel. There is wi-fi throughout.
