Hotel Eden Du Lac by Jamie Dunford Wood

Unlike many of the other Montreux hotels, the Eden is right on the lakeside, with no roads to distract, and its lake views are unimpaired. Moreover unlike the Montreux Palace the windows are generous, and open up onto wide balconies. However, the 105 rooms and bathrooms are smaller, each furnished with a little chandelier and old fashioned radiators, with double doors in the Austrian fashion. Only one of them has a shower. The 50 odd rooms at the back are smaller and darker, even on the top floors, so pay the c. 40% extra for a lakeside view. The corridors are scattered with assorted antiques. Only one of the 105 rooms has a shower. This 110 year old hotel has plenty of charm and character. Downstairs the belle époque décor is played for all it is worth, with vivid drapes and an over the top ballroom to eat breakfast in. The main restaurant, however, is small and rather dark, shaded by trees lining the lakeside, and lends little sense of occasion, but if the weather is fine, you can eat outdoors on the terrace. There's a wonderful raised outdoor pool and garden above the lakeside promenade.
