Hotel Des Grands Hommes by Ken Scrudato

Paris is crawling with literary pedigree. But the recently renovated Hotel Des Grands Hommes--literally, Hotel Of The Great Men--lays a particular claim: Philippe Soupault and Andre Breton founded "automatic writing" here, thus giving birth to literary surrealism. There's nothing surreal about this former 18th Century manor now, but a room with a view of the Pantheon certainly banishes the banalities of le vie quotidienne. The 31 rooms are done up in Empire style, and are at once sleek and classical. And despite the exquisite antiques and resplendent fabrics, it retains the distinctive charme de boheme of an artists’ haunt.
