Hotel De Vigny by Jamie Dunford Wood

This 37-room Relais and Chateaux hotel (the only one in Paris) is an odd mix of a faux country-house styling in a rather unattractive modern block. The tone is chintzy, interiors heavily swagged and slightly gloomy, with red fabric walls, busy patterns, a feeling exacerbated by low ceilings. Bathrooms are mahogany with dark marble and worn bronze fittings - slightly dated now. Walls are adorned by corporate job-lot prints, with the occasional oil painting in the suites. These have the benefit of jacuzzis and separate showers.

Downstairs there is a small library, with a consignment of leather bound books by Anatole France, and others that do not seem to have been read in years. The one high point here is the lovely art deco restaurant - another theme to add to the mix - popular with locals. However, for dependable French styling and service, the hotel remains popular, especially with Americans, who appreciate a whiff of tradition and modern plumbing.
