Hotel Belles Rives by Jamie Dunford Wood

The Art Deco Belles Rives has a solid pedigree, which of course the hotel trades on heavily: in the 20s it was home to Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald, a fact echoed in the art deco theme today. It is on a surprisingly crowded stretch of coast in exclusive Juan les Pins where, like most of the Cote d'Azur, good beaches are in short supply. The Belles Rives has its own - sort off - but most of its seafront is made of a concrete promenade and pier. Without a pool, the main draw here is the sophisticated seaside restaurant, as well as the main one in the hotel, with fine veiews and art deco detailing.

Outside, a series of steps leads done to a fine wide terrace, and thence on to the seaside bar and beach. Rooms in the hotel vary - standard rooms with seaviews are light, but with basic bathroom fittings. Best rooms are the deluxe corner rooms. The overall feel is of a fine three star in a good position with a great restaurant. Those who like the art deco feel will appreciate it, but for four star comfort, they may feel disappointed.
