Es Castell by Jenny Pidgeon

Es Castell must have one of the most stunning natural situations on the island, with panoramic views stretching for miles across the gentle lowlands of central Mallorca. Atop a hill near the tiny village of Binibona, you reach Es Castell by a bumpy, winding track which runs through part of its 750 acre estate. The building, which has been in the same family since the 11th century, is very attractive and has been transformed into a wonderful agriturismo hideaway. Ex-city worker James and wife Paola have made the best of their raw materials – flower filled courtyards, an imposing stone-clad entrance hall, an old olive press room perfect for large parties, a large lounge complete with fireplace and books for cosy evenings, and (best of all) a large sun-terrace for admiring the wonderful views. They've added a swimming pool in the garden which looks over the valley, and there's a small, light-filled restaurant in the main house where you can sample local Mallorcan dishes cooked with local produce. The twelve bedrooms are decorated in a Mallorquin style with whitewashed walls, traditional wooden beds and modern tiled bathrooms.

Es Castell is perfect for those seeking an escape from busy civilisation - active visitors can go fishing, biking, horseriding, birdwatching and shooting for wild goats in nearby pine woods whilst more tranquil guests can simply relax with a book, take in the views and soak up the atmosphere.
