Dar El Hanaa by Joanna Monkhouse

Near the Ben Youssef Medersa, tucked down a winding alley is a riad that is calm and refreshing in décor and atmosphere, Dar El Hanaa. Built around a courtyard of citrus trees, there are three sections of the riad – the main part has already been converted to guest rooms, filled with pale wood furniture, iron bedsteads and neutral fabrics in white, cream and beige with ensuite showers. The old guest section has a high and intricate painted ceiling which will soon become a new suite. A pool is being added in the former servants’ quarters. There is a hamman on the roof terrace, along with sun loungers and a Berber tent, and a small salon on the ground floor.
