The UK is particularly good value now: you can find boutique and luxury hotel rooms at great rates. And in many cities there are plenty of attractions that are completely free.
Budget Hotels in Edinburgh
Edinburgh offers one of Britain’s best city breaks with its combination of history, culture, shopping and restaurants. It’s also an easy place to visit on a budget - even if you want to stay in a boutique hotel. With trendy modern rooms and most of the attractions, shopping and nightlife in easy walking distance, The Point makes a great base to explore the Scottish capital.
Every night the sound of a piper playing from the battlements of Edinburgh Castle drifts across the Old Town - it’s the perfect time to wander the medieval streets. And it won’t cost a penny to walk along the Royal Mile towards the imposing Castle at the top, explore the shops of Princes Street or climb the grassy mount known as Arthur’s Seat.
Budget Hotels in Yorkshire
Over the border in England, York often tops polls for the UK’s best city destination. There’s an intact medieval city wall to walk round, the fabulous Minster, award-winning museums and lively shopping, restaurants and bars.
There’s even high quality free daily street entertainment - carefully vetted by the city council. And if you want to stay in style right in the heart of the old city centre, the chic and modern Hotel 53 is the place for you.
Still Yorkshire, but a little further south, Leeds is challenging its near neighbour as a number one city break choice. This vibrant city scores with its beautifully restored Victorian Quarter shopping area, including designer stores like Harvey Nicholls, plus its fantastic nightlife and entertainment.
The World Heritage site of Saltaire Village is just on the edge of town. It’s free to enter the lively Salts Mill at the heart of the village. A break in Leeds needn’t break your budget - especially if you choose to stay at the luxury townhouse hotel Quebecs.
Budget Hotels in South-East England
Down on England’s south coast, Brighton’s famous beach, fun-packed pier and labyrinth of alleyway shops and bars are completely free to explore too. Right in these brick-paved ‘Lanes’ you’ll find a cool boutique hotel too: myhotel Brighton.
To the west of England, the classic unspoilt countryside of the Cotswolds has a reputation for being home to the priciest, stuffiest old hotels. But there are several excellent budget UK hotels available here now too. The acclaimed No 12 boutique townhouse hotel in the historic market town of Cirencester, the second biggest city in Roman Britain. The amphitheatre seated 8000 - it’s still there and is free to visit, as is the lively New Brewery Arts Centre and beautiful town centre Abbey Gardens complete with lake and Roman ruins.
Budget Hotels in London
Even in London there is stylish accommodation within everyone’s budget; B+B Belgravia is a top choice for cheap city chic. Rooms are light, airy with modern design using neutral colours and polished wood. And best of all it’s a short walk from Victoria Station.
