Amalfi Coast: Amalfi to Ravello by Matthew Barker

Wind your way around the one time playground for Edwardian British aristos, the Emperor Tiberius and Frank Sinatra, refuelling with ice-cold limoncellos at little clifftop trattorias; a hairy but spectacular ride, until you hit the beach at Positano. The only downside is the quite appalling traffic in summer. Go in the winter and stay in a swish hotel.

They say: “In many places rock has been blasted away to accommodate the road, and the turns are tight. Then too, Italian drivers blithely pass cars on blind curves with only a horn-honk as a warning” (Miami Herald)

Suggested listening: Cavalleria Rusticana; Music to Watch Girls By Vols 1 & 2.
