Travel the Hong Kong Harbour by Night by Amy Rosen

Take the Star Ferry across to Kowloon side and watch the fireworks display that is the Hong Kong skyline by night.

Ride a Steam Train in Colorado by Linda Ballou

The Durango to Silverton steam-powered train in Colorado has been chugging up the formidable Animus Canyon from Durango to the mining town of Silverton, 45 miles away, for over 120 years. Riding in open air gondolas, you are so close to the stunning scenery you can touch the limbs of pines scenting the air, and watch deer munching grass in wildflower meadows as you crane your neck to get a glimpse of waterfalls cascading down sheer granite walls to join the river below.

Travel on Le Petit Train Jaune by Roger Moss

France: Whatever the season, the Little Yellow Train, a set of antique rolling stock from the 1920s, leaves the fortified town of Villefranche de Conflent and climbs high into the mountains of the French Pyrenees through mysterious tunnels, across daringly-constructed viaducts and a vertiginous suspension bridge. As if that weren’t enough, you’ll pass a giant solar furnace, the ski resort of Font Romeu and the highest railway station in all France. In summer you can see it all from an open carriage.

See the View of Scafell Pike by Bradley Winterton

One of the steepest roads in the English Lakes, rising from the head of Eskdale, culminates at Hardknott Pass. Once there, turn left (if you’ve arrived from Eskdale) and head up the nearby fell. It’s only 15 minutes to the summit, but the view across Upper Eskdale to Scafell and Scafell Pike is astonishing, a grand panorama of rock and sky, waterfalls, sheep and silence.

With its combination of high Andean plateaux, intense Amazon rainforest, surreal salt deserts, rich indigenous culture and absorbing Spanish colonial cities like Sucre and Potosí, this landlocked country offers the greatest hits of South America in one neat package.
