Are the forty-plus temperature days making you pine for a cooler climate? Not wintry cold, but on the pleasant side of thirty so you can get active on these long summer days without risking heat stroke. Then go south my friends, south to Australia’s best summer island resort - Tasmania.
There is a stunning array of vacation choices on this picturesque island. Spectacular coastal drives, enticing wineries, enthralling convict folklore and a rich menu of locally grown produce all combined with small town warmth and friendliness to make Tasmania an inspired summer destination.
However, for the feel of cool breezes and lungs full of crisp clean air while taking in stunning views, it’s difficult to pass up Tasmania’s jewel in the crown, Cradle Mountain in Lake St Clair National Park.
Dolerite peaks tower over tranquil lakes and pools, expansive moorlands bordered by majestic pine and myrtle groves and temperate rainforests that reveal soothing waterfalls and babbling creeks; Cradle Mountain’s World Heritage status is apparent as soon as you enter the park. This diverse landscape is home to an array of friendly wildlife and all is available to discover by a wide choice of walking trails and boardwalk paths. Cradle Mountain will leave you wondering, why didn’t I come here earlier?
Where to stay
Cradle Mountain hosts every accommodation choice, from camping under the stars to sleeping in four and five star style. The Cradle Mountain Chateau, situated just five minutes from the parks information centre, offers a choice of fine dining in Grey Gums and a casual menu for lunch and dinner in Quolls Restaurant, which accompanies the well-appointed rooms and suites.
Get active
The Chateau has its own fleet of mountain bikes for daily hire and can organize 4WD tours. However, the best way to experience the park is on foot. First stop should be the Cradle Mountain Information Centre. It’s stocked with books, maps and knowledgeable national park staff who can guide you on how to explore the park. Whether you are in the mood for a stroll, a walk or a heart pumping hike that lasts a few hours or a few days, there are countless combinations to choose from.
Chill out
Relaxation is also on the menu at Cradle Mountain. The chateau boasts its own day spa, its signature treatment designed to reinvigorate hike weary legs. A leisurely stroll through the adjacent Wilderness Gallery will inspire your own vacation images. The gallery celebrates the spectacle of nature photography from both the immediate region and around the world by renowned international photographers.
Meet some new friends
Wildlife is in abundance at Cradle Mountain. A friendly wombat, a wallaby or a joey, even a platypus or Tasmanian Devil pups can be enjoyed in your exploring of the park. The National Park Information Centre conducts walking tours focused on the wildlife. While animal sightings can not be assured, enlightening tales on the flora and fauna of the park are guaranteed.
