It was under the compulsion of a great story that I found myself travelling to Bosra. I have imagined Bosra for years, for it is an essential and mysterious part of the life of the Prophet Muhammad, who worked on the caravans throughout his manhood.

I found myself, in the arid wastes of Syria’s eastern desert, not far from the Iraqi border, entering a roadside café that turned out to be a tourist trap.
