Greenbrier 5 Stars

"A top West Virginia luxury hotel, set in lovely landscaped gardens in White Sulphur Springs."

Hotel Overview

The Greenbrier luxury hotel in West Virginia is a presidential favourite: twenty six US presidents have stayed in its Dorothy Draper-designed rooms. Aside from Draper's interiors, the luxury hotel is famed for being the site of an underground bunker, designed to house US Congress in the event of nuclear war. The bunker was "live" from 1969 until 1992, until its location was reported in a national newspaper. Now, the Greenbrier holds tours of this rather unique (and chilling) historical site.

The facilities

The Greenbrier is large, luxe and loud: it has one opulent main restaurant and six other bars, lounges and cafes. The Main Dining Room restaurant serves classic American food fit for a president (just as well, then) and you can buy Starbucks coffee from The Gourmet Shoppe. Head to Slammin' Sammy's sports lounge to try a wide range of drinks and cocktails.

The Greenbrier is built by Weat Virginia's White Sulpher Springs, with the cleansing mineral-rich water pumped directly to the luxury hotel's Spa. The spa specialises in Hydrotherapy treatments, and there are a wide range of facials, massages, body treatments and fitness classes available.

The Greenbrier is also good for getting active: try out its three golf courses, play tennis or go for a hike in the nearby Allegheny Mountains.

The rooms

This luxury hotel has 741 rooms and suites, all decorated by or in the style of design pioneer Dorothy Draper. This means lots of clashing 60s brights, bombastic flower prints and ostentatious furniture. Still eye-grabbing today, the rooms are icons of 20th century American design. All rooms at the Greenbrier are, however, still fitted for modern luxurious living, with goodies including flat screen TVs and complimentary Wi-Fi.
