The Sir Francis Drake Hotel is one of San Francisco's oldest and most beloved hotels. Opened in 1928, this is an establishment that prides itself on its history, and its perfect location in the heart of Union Square. The staff are helpful and friendly, in particular the ebullient and legendary Beefeater doorman Tom Sweeney, who has become something of a Frisco institution in his own right.

The facilities

The Drake doesn't have a huge amount of on-site facilities, justifiably relying on its location to entertain guests. Chinatown, the Moscone Centre, the Museum of Modern Art and the waterfront Embarcadero are all within close proximity, as are luxury chains such as Tiffany, Gucci, Prada and Armani. They are well-equipped to deal with all business needs and have a small fitness centre.

The rooms

The Drake's 416 rooms are decorated in a "rejuvenating" cream and sage colour scheme, and are generally tasteful and comfortable with great views of the city and San Francisco Bay. Splashing out on the Presidential Suite will get you a private deck and rooftop Jacuzzi.
