Hotel Overview

Review of The Crescent, by Ken Scrudato

The remake of a low-key, old Hollywood style boutique hotel, The Crescent is the new choice of media hipsters crashing in Beverly Hills. And it's all very LA, it must be said.

The facilities

First, the boutique hotel is totally non-smoking. Second, the vibe is overridingly Zen, something Hollywood types love to aspire to, especially after spitting another actor or two into the proverbial gutter.

Still, what's marvelous about The Crescent is that it manages to be cool without the slightest nod to the scenesterism so prevalent at other intentionally hip LA boutique hotels.

The small lobby, lounge and restaurant are all an extension of one another, creating a great little social vibe; but, thankfully, the Crescent is too low-key to reach a fever pitch.

The rooms

The rooms are starkly furnished, just some plant life, a small stool and low, immensely comfortable platform beds. The stone showers are a luxurious touch. In the evening, the candlelit front patio is an elegant and truly relaxing place to have cocktails. Zen, indeed.

Back in the 20s and 30s, this large villa-style building occupying the corner of Beverly Hills' 'Golden Triangle', was a doss house for the movie studio across the road. Suitably, the newly re-imagined Crescent still has cinematic associations, with scores of movie industry types frequently found chatting over scripts on the front patio, or staying overnight in one of the 38 crisp, minimalist rooms. It might not boast the excesses of some of LA's showier hotels, but it is indisputably hip.

The Crescent doesn't offer the full gamut of services as it knows its guests will be spending most of their time exploring the city. Valet parking whisks cars to and from the car park next door, leaving guests to saunter up the steps and be sipping a drink within minutes of arrival. Many locals know the Crescent simply as a classy drinking spot, with a front terrace wrapped in padded banquettes and warmed by a glass-encased fire in the evenings. On summer nights be sure to reserve your spot if you plan to stay for food... the restaurant is increasingly popular with Beverly Hills' well-heeled dinner set.

A five-minute walk away, Rodeo Drive is dripping in luxury brands and exorbitant price tags, and - even for mere mortals - is worth a window-shop. The wild nights of the Sunset Strip are ten minutes away in a taxi, and the hotel has a deal with a local gym if you want to work it all off the next morning.

In The Cresent's 38 rooms, spread over two floors either side of a dim-lit corridor, the beds are the stars of the show... dominating the interiors and pasted in crisp Italian linen and down comforters. The furnishings are simple and minimalist, with geometric dark wood tables and consoles, and entertainment centres tidily tucked into a nook in the wall. As seems the norm in hip boutiques these days... an iPod loaded with pre-chosen Crescent playlists sits in a speaker docking system next to the beds.

The bathrooms maintain the crisp minimalism, with concrete walls complimented by ceramic basins, White Company toiletries and black bathrobes. Be warned, this is an old building... the plumbing can take its time to heat the shower up.
