"Secluded and luxurious, this former Victorian hunting lodge has only nine rooms and a beautiful seaside setting in Portpatrick."

Knockinaam Lodge is a boutique hotel in Portpatrick in western Scotland. It was built in the second half of the 19th century as a hunting lodge, is set in 30 acres of gardens and woodland on the shores of the Irish Sea.

Knockinaam Lodge provides a luxurious base for those seeking to explore the surrounding wilds, and guests can have a champagne picnic prepared to take with them. Those who prefer to skip the picnic and rough it have ample opportunity for hiking, fishing and pony trekking in the surrounding area.

The facilities

During the summer, guests can sunbathe on Knockinaam Lodge`s private beach or enjoy tea and shortbread by the boathouse.

Knockinaam Lodge`s kitchen uses only the finest and freshest local produce for its French-influenced restaurant cuisine. The huge wine list, with over 400 labels, provides the ideal accompaniment to the meal. After dinner, guests can sit in front of the log-fire in the wood-panelled bar and sample the home-made petit fours or try a dram from one of the largest collections of single malt whiskies in Scotland. The food is of the highest order, whatever you choose: there are home-baked croissants for breakfast, Aberdeen Angus beef for dinner and canapés with cocktails in the evening.

The rooms

The boutique hotel has 10 individually named and decorated rooms, traditionally decorated with country house prints and antique furniture. Beds are mostly king sized, and the Hannay suite has a roll top bath.

Churchill retreated to Knockinaam Lodge to plan the Allied campaigns of the closing stages of the Second World War. The room where he slept retains its period furniture and the adjoining bathroom, with its vast bath tub, has amazing sea views.

Press Quotes

"Today, its dramatic location is only part of the appeal. Knockinaam is now renowned for its food and wood-panelled (slightly too much tartan) whisky bar, which stocks 120 warming and reviving malts." Independent 06
