Andaz Liverpool Street 5 Stars

"Liverpool Street provides the perfect backdrop to this sleek, contemporary design hotel, with an arty, edgy vibe."

The Press Say

"The room was a simple, modern, airy space with high ceilings, photographic art, a big window, huge gilded mirror and a few gizmos." Times 08

Hotel Overview

Review of Andaz Liverpool Street, by Nadia Latif

Liverpool Street Station is not a place that you'd immediately associate with one of London's sleekest design hotels. Nevertheless, this hip corner of the City is home to Andaz, which sits directly above the busy commuters and bustling trains. It is unconventional and trendsetting, a place to escape from the stuffy, tradition-clad rigours of the more established hotels of central London.

The quirkiness begins in the Living Room (the lobby), a high-ceilinged, mirrored space filled with sparse swathes of grey furnishings, local artworks and... not much else. There's no reception desk as such, but instead the multi-tasking 'Hosts' meet each guest armed with a portable computer. Check-in is a relaxing affair; recline on modernist cubes of furniture, sip champagne and let the staff do the rest.

There's no reception desk as such, but instead the multi-tasking 'Hosts' meet each guest armed with a portable computer. Check-in is a relaxing affair; recline on modernist cubes of furniture, sip champagne and let the staff do the rest.

Andaz is large and sprawling, with amenities to match. It encompasses five restaurants, a business centre, a health club, spa and various meeting rooms. There's even a Masonic Temple (though it's not actually used by the Masons, this was a surprise find during restoration work and now functions as a truly beautiful events space).

The restaurants here deserve a special mention. Between them they offer a great range of cuisine that reflects the area's cosmopolitan vibe and enjoy significant popularity with guests and non-guests alike - always a good sign.

There's chic Japanese sushi at Miyako, fresh seafood at Catch and traditional British fare in the George Pub, and more besides. All of the restaurants have organic and locally-sourced food, in keeping with this design hotel's eco-positive outlook.

The 267 bedrooms and suites have been refurbished with the environment in mind. So, each room has a complimentary 'healthy mini-bar', packed full of organic juices, water and other treats. The marble toilets are ecologically sound, and use 80% less water with each flush.

The hotel's green credentials do not detract from the luxuriant feel of each room, however. There are iPod docking stations, with iPods loaned out on request. Each room has an ergonomic work station and WIFI access as standard. The huge flat-screen televisions have a complimentary pay-per-view movie service. And all of this in utter peace and tranquillity - you'll never believe that you're above a train station at all.

Eating in

There are five eateries to choose from here. Miyako is Andaz's Japanese restaurant, serving up sushi, sashimi and tempura. There's the George Pub for traditional British fare. Catch serves fresh seafood and has an accompanying champagne bar. 1901 provides chic French cuisine without the stuffiness. Last but not least is Eastway, the ever-popular bistro.

Review of Andaz, by Kevin Kalhoefer

Situated in the middle of Liverpool Street in London, the Andaz has roots as the first hotel in London's Square Mile, dating from the late 19th-century. But, after a recent and extensive renovation in 2000 costing over £70 million, it is now very much a modern design hotel and offers enough to accommodate the most demanding of clients.

Andaz takes full advantage of its position on Liverpool Street, an area heavily populated with artists. Exhibitions showcasing the works of local artists are often put on, and from time to time, pieces are put on display throughout. Local artists contribute to everything from the wallpaper art in the rooms to paintings in the restaurants. Aside from buying pieces for decoration, Andaz has also served as a patron of the arts by having writers, painters and performance poets in residence.

Despite the decorative overhaul to modernize, Andaz's interior still maintains much of its rich history, largely because of zoning codes that prevent tampering with rooms designated as historically important. The decor is a pastiche of styles; traditional period pieces mingle with post-modern art pieces. The juxtaposition of old and new lends Andaz a refreshingly quirky character.

Andaz features four different restaurants: Miyabi, the reasonably priced sushi restaurant; the Fishmarket for seafood enthusiasts; Terminus a brassiere and buffet; and Aurora, the flagship restaurant with elaborate dining and award-winning staff. There are also four different bars throughout, George being the most popular and accessible.

The 267 rooms are spacious. All come equipped with state of the art entertainment systems: satellite televisions, CD players, a DVD library of 500 titles and a music library of 1000 CDs. Many have separate power showers.
