Hempel 5 Stars
"Itβs white on white at this super-trendy west London address β the first of its kind on the design hotel scene."
Hotel Overview
Review of Hempel, by Christopher Deliso
Britain's first Zen minimalist hotel, the Hempel bears the aesthetic stamp of its creator, acclaimed designer Anouska Hempel. Located in the heart of West London in Bayswater, this highly unique hotel is conveniently set just a few minutes walk from Paddington Station - though being tucked into a leafy square at Craven Hill Gardens, it's a place of respite from the busy metropolis.
The thirty-five rooms and six suites all obey the same Zen-inspired aesthetic; nevertheless, these individually-designed creations all have unique differences. White-and-black tones prevail, cultivating an airiness and perception of depth - with appropriate little surprises, like inner doors indistinguishable from the walls, providentially opening onto revelations like the sleek bathrooms, with sunken, Japanese-style baths done up in smooth stone and red blossoms ready to be sprinkled on the waters.
All of the Hempel's rooms feature comfy beds you just fall into - some just long and low extensions of the smooth walls, others set on platforms or even suspended from above. Natural lighting is favoured and all surfaces have a uniform sheen indicating not only design, but loving attention to detail and upkeep. In addition to all the expected five-star amenities and free WiFi, there are nice unannounced extras like varied foreign drinks from the minibar, designer soaps and a colourful array of travel magazines splashed out across the table.
The superlative restaurant is considered among the best on the Hyde Park haute cuisine scene, meaning it's sought out by discerning Londoners as well as guests. Menus change seasonally, but the artfully prepared dishes always consist of the freshest, hand-picked ingredients from local independent suppliers. And the candlelit, chic bar also attracts an in-the-know local clientele who come for the ambience and signature specialty cocktails. And, in addition to a state-of-the-art facility where a company's board members can log their minutes, there's even a contemporary art gallery for events. The leafy Zen garden - where Hugh Grant once undertook cinematic nuptials - is ideal for the real thing.
Despite its upscale image and minimalist chic, the Hempel is never pretentious, its refreshing openness accentuated by the excellent service provided by courteous staff. The surrounding neighbourhood itself, full of shimmering, ornate white townhouses and quiet sidestreets, is great for walks in the morning sunshine.

The Press Say
"Set new standards for boutique living in Europe. The gorgeous furnishings β almost exclusively black-and-white β are to die for." The Guardian 07Reviews
Review of Hempel, by Isabel Clift
Gone are the all-white corridors without door numbers and the itty-bitty Thai-Italian fusion food. The Hempel's ditched its minimalist aesthetic in favour of a 'back to basics' approach - in the way only a five star design landmark can.
The hangar-esque cream lobby is still there, complete with church candles, sunken lounge chairs and piped lo-fi tunes. As is the clean-lined Zen Garden (enclosed by London's most famous railings, after Hugh Grant scaled them with a "whoops-a-daisy" in Notting Hill).
The Restaurant has kept its dark and dramatic subterranean vibe, but now serves re-vamped Modern British and European food. The delicate seven-course tasting menu is popular, with produce from local, independent suppliers. Upstairs, those in the know order The Hempel's signature off-menu Chillitini in the black marble bar.
35 rooms and 6 suites remain true to designer Anouska Hempel's Asian-chic principles. Rooms have white walls, pale floorboards and curvy-edged all-white bathrooms, while mattresses on raised platforms count for super stripped-down beds. Flat screen TVs, DVD players and free Wi-Fi add tech clout. For a clean-lined view to match your interiors, nab a Superior Room overlooking the Zen Garden.
The split level Lioness Den is Hempel's most iconic suite. A minimalist marvel, the mezzanine-level sleeping area is suspended on metal cables over the lounge. This 'bedroom platform' is kitted out for comfort, though; storage shelves, an LCD TV and a next door WC room sit alongside the mattress and the decorative rice baskets.
Downstairs, the lounge is typically spacious and clutter-free, and its adjoining bathroom is a bit of classic high design. Its trough-like sunken bath/shower and long steel sink redefine standardised bathroom basics, but the amusing part is the box-like wood-panelled loo - shut the lid and you won't realise it's there. Anouska Hempel's aesthetic lives on.
Review of The Hempel, by Martin O'Brien
The Hempel inhabits an elegant facade of stucco-fronted Georgian townhouses in London's Bayswater. Step past a forest of Phalaenopsis orchids in the small entrance foyer and you enter a Reception area that Kubrick might have designed for a futuristic film set. It has an empty swimming-pool length of windowless Portland stone, plus down-lit Italian plaster bounded at each end by sunken seating and long, low fires where the flames flicker blue over beds of crushed oyster shell.
In the basement below the reception hall, reached down a perspex staircase fixed to a block of stone, you'll find I-Thai, the Hempel's restaurant serving some of the most exciting fusion food in the capital, a captivating take on Italian, Thai and Japanese classics.
This same style statement continues in the Hempel's 35 rooms, six suites and five private apartments.Beds are set on platforms or suspended from ceilings, bathtubs are hewn from blocks of black granite or pale limestone, and the bare wood floorboards are wide, limed and lacquered.
But there's nothing minimalist or monastic about the hotel's in-room creature comforts. The Frette bed linen is crisp and cool, the sofas plumply inviting and the mini-bars stocked with French, Japanese and Italian lagers, the Hempel's own label champagne, and still and sparkling water from Norway. There are also scented Diptyque candles, compact Kodak flash cameras and a range of 'Anatomicals' - everything from breath fresheners to a "Bender Mender" hangover cure.
