Hotel Overview
Review of Bentley, by Jeroen Bergmans
When acclaimed Italian architect Piero Lisoni took on his first design hotel project, the Bentley Hotel in Istanbul, he re-defined the luxury hotel in the Turkish capital. Clean lines, contemporary furniture and an excellent location minutes from Istanbul's congress centre, Taksim Square and the boutiques and bars of trendy Nicantasi attract design-savvy tourists and sharp-suited businessmen hungry for a luxury hotel that reflects their lifestyle.
That's not to say that the design hotel defies the rich heritage of Istanbul. In the lobby lounge, marble-topped Saarinen side-tables stand next to traditional Turkish coffee tables inlaid with mother-of-pearl. Sleek shelving units display Ottoman ceramics and silverware and silk-lined walls are hung with the Bentley Hotel's own collection of antique kaftans and calligraphy.
The rooms
The Bentley Hotel's 50 rooms are decorated in a calming palette of browns and beiges. Zebrano wood cabinetry and photos of old Istanbul add character. Large bathrooms with generous amenity kits and Turkish delight at turn-down are luxurious touches.
Visitors on a budget should note that prices are per room not per person so it's always best to share. Those happy to splurge should plump for the design hotel's expansive Penthouse suites. Each has its own a sound system, kitchenette and private terrace with an outside shower, sun loungers and views across the Bosphorus and the Golden Horn.
The facilities
The menu at the Bentley Hotel's restaurant reflects its East-meets-West design aesthetic, mixing modern European and traditional Turkish dishes. The design hotel's bar is sleek and simple and even the basement fitness centre, lined with raw silk, displays Lissoni's eye for detail.
