The Lloyd Hotel and Cultural Embassy has, like a cat, had many lives (emigrant hotel, prison, workshops) before its most recent reincarnation as a hotel. Built on the small island of Oostelijke Handelskade, the design is an eclectic mix of Art Deco and Renaissance and is jaw-droppingly impressive. Its location in the city's Eastern docklands, close to Amsterdam's hot spots like the Dam Square and Red Light District is more than convenient.

The facilities

There is plenty on-site to keep guests occupied. Rooms are kitted out with bespoke creations by renowned Dutch designers, there is a 'corner' shop and best of all, the cultural embassy offers entertainment in communal areas and nightly performances - all for free. There is complimentary Wi-Fi throughout the hotel and room service 24 hours a day. Eat at the refectory-style benches in the hotel bar and restaurant or bury your head in a good book in the library.

The rooms

Ranging from one to five stars, the hotel's 117 rooms are all unique and innovative in their decor having been privy to the personal touch by a number of exciting Dutch designers. Careful attention to the preservation of original features such as exposed beams and cupboards work beautifully alongside brightly-coloured bath sets in the middle of the room, atmospheric lighting and even a swing and a grand piano. Book yourself into the five star room with a four metre bed and there'll be more than enough room for two of you (in fact, the bed sleeps eight).
