Hotel V Frederiksplein 3 Stars

"Simple yet funky with friendly, attentive staff, this modern boutique hotel sits on the edge of Amsterdam's canal district."

Hotel Overview

Review of Hotel V Frederiksplein, by Jeroen Bergmans

Boutique Hotel V is located just beyond de Pijp, Amsterdam's super-hip district of the moment. Hotel V is the perfect bolthole for design-savvy hedonists who would rather splash their cash in the city's shops, restaurants and clubs than on its fancier hotels.

The facilities

The boutique hotel's lobby sets the mood with its low-slung purple sofa, Apple Mac offering free internet access and retro pebble-clad fireplace that's très Gstaad ski chalet circa 1976. Round the corner, the long and cosy breakfast room is lined with cow-print stools and looks out onto a small private patio perfect for those glorious (but sadly rare) sunny summer mornings.

The rooms

Upstairs the 24 bedrooms of the boutique hotel are basic but tasteful, with white designer furnishings spruced up with the occasional fake fur cushion. If you're booking a double, ask f

If you're booking a double, ask for one with an Auping bed. Prospective buyers of these EUR 9,000 ultra-beds get the chance to test-drive them in the boutique hotel. All being well with this innovative, raunchy scheme, the beds will soon appear in all the Hotel V's rooms and the ones at its sister property on Frederiksplein.

Hotel V has a relaxing garden, ideal during the summer months. There are 24 rooms, decorated in a minimalist fashion - white sheets, pale wooden bed heads, fresh flowers , a simple desk and chair, a TV and hip slogans on the walls, (such as "Live and let live"). The bathrooms are simple - white and clean, with the remaining few to be renovated soon, although it is the décor and not the standard that is being changed. This is a great hotel for those on a budget who appreciate stylish simplicity.
