Hotel Overview

Review of Amsterdam American Hotel, by Joanna Monkhouse

The Amsterdam American Hotel was built in 1900 and has been a national monument since 1972. It is centrally located in the Leidesplein, in the heart of Amsterdam's entertainment district, close to the shops and the museum quarter. The building is in the Art Nouveau style, with arches, turrets and balconies, topped by a clock tower, and the interior is a mix of Art Deco and modern.

The hotel is popular for the size of its rooms, its service and its facilities (which include all mod cons - guests can even request goldfish if they wish!) The Café Américain is a regular meeting point for locals and visitors, and has an original 1902 mural on the walls, 1930s oil paintings of "A Midsummer's Night Dream", Art Deco chandeliers and vaulted ceilings.

In summer, the huge arched doors are opened and tables are spread outside under the trees in the square. There is a jazz brunch on Sundays. The dark wood bar has a strong celebrity following, as indicated by the numerous signed photographs adorning the walls.

Décor in the 175 rooms is pleasing Art Deco and standard throughout. Rooms on the street side can be noisy despite the double glazing; those with canal views are preferable.
